It all started at practice. The St. John’s Lady Cadets often ran a simple drill where the first-team defense took the floor with 30 seconds on the clock. Their objective is to get a stop.

During the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference girls’ basketball championship game, St. John’s was led by two with only twenty seconds left. McNamara had the ball.

“Our practice focuses on one stop every day,” explained senior guard Kyndal Walker. “We carry that mentality onto the court.”

Sophomore guard Morgan Stewart blocked the ballhandler’s right-handed shot on the left side of the basket, securing a 45-41 win for the Cadets and their third consecutive WCAC title.

“I didn’t even realize there was no one behind me,” Stewart said. “I was just trying not to foul. When I felt that ball on my hands, I knew the game was over.”

Over the last three seasons, St. John’s has had a different journey each time, but with the same outcome. In 2022, the Lady Cadets, a young team, surprised the league by defeating the unbeaten McNamara in the final. Last winter, despite having a regular season riddled with injuries, they recovered in time for a championship run.

This season, the Cadets were an experienced and talented team that knew how to win.

“You could feel it happening late in the season,” Cadets Coach Jonathan Scribner said. “We were as prepared as we were ever going to be, and we had plenty of playoff experience.”

One player who exemplified the veteran mentality more than anyone else was Walker. During her second year, she was a young guard who unexpectedly bloomed into a star. In her junior year, when the team was hit by injuries, she remained a stabilizing presence. And in their recent game in Northwest Washington, she showcased her full potential as a senior leader, wise and fearless. She led the Cadets to victory with 18 points.

“She goes down as one of the all-time greats here,” Scribner said. “When you have somebody that you trust that much, defensively and with the ball in their hands, it makes you look like a really good coach.”

Last week, Bishop McNamara, a high school basketball team, had to play without its senior star Madisen McDaniel, a McDonald’s all-American guard, who was injured. Despite the absence of McDaniel, the Mustangs were able to showcase their physical and dominant style of play that had helped them achieve a perfect league record this winter. In the fourth quarter, they made a strong comeback, which energized the Mustangs crowd at Bender Arena and challenged the Cadets to earn their victory.
