The Laurel Spartans turned in a dominant all-around effort on October 18, defeating the Bladensburg Mustangs 49 to 0 in a commanding road win.
The atmosphere was perfect for football — clear skies, warm sunshine, and a crowd full of energy. It was a great afternoon to be on the field covering the game as both a photographer and sports writer. Laurel came ready to play, and it showed from the opening snap.
The Spartans put up 14 points in the first quarter, 15 in the second, 6 in the third, and 14 in the fourth, keeping pressure on Bladensburg all game. The Mustangs couldn’t find a rhythm against a Spartan defense that controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish.
Offensive Breakdown
Quarterback Demerius Custis (Jr.) led a balanced passing attack, completing 5 of 9 passes for 63 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior A. Pena-Jordan went 1-for-1 for 11 yards and added a two-point conversion, while Asaiah Gammel (Sr.) threw for 59 yards on 3 of 4 passing. In total, Laurel quarterbacks combined for 133 yards and 3 passing touchdowns.
The running game was just as efficient. The Spartans rushed 13 times for 107 yards, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. Senior King James Corbett led with 29 yards and 1 touchdown, while Andre Stokes (Jr.) added 27 yards and 1 touchdown. Deante Mack (Jr.) ran for 39 yards and another score, and Ghislain Sogbo (Sr.) powered in a short rushing touchdown to help seal the win.
In the air, Kenneth Cosmas (Sr.) led all receivers with 3 catches for 73 yards and 1 touchdown. Jaziah Ragan (So.) caught 2 passes for 20 yards and a score, and Kareem Oyekan (Jr.) added 29 yards and a touchdown. Ramone Johnson (Sr.) chipped in with an 11-yard reception.
Altogether, Laurel produced 315 all-purpose yards, split between 133 passing and 107 rushing, with seven total touchdowns from six different players.
Defensive Highlights
Laurel’s defense was outstanding, holding Bladensburg to zero first downs and forcing multiple turnovers. The Spartans totaled 31 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks in a relentless defensive effort.
