FOOTBALL: O’CONNOR 42, STEVENS 7: Panthers show offensive firepower in big win

No. 2 O’Connor had little trouble moving to 7-0 on the season with a comfortable 42-7 victory over Stevens in a game featured by OK3Sports.

Roel Sanchez was his usual self, leading the Panthers to a 35-0 halftime lead. Sanchez finished 8 of 10 through the air for 165 yards and a touchdown before adding an insurance touchdown on the ground in the third quarter.

Millard Bradford usually features primarily on the defensive side of the football, but he was on offense for the very first play of the game, gliding 71 yards to the end zone to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 9:27 remaining in the first quarter.

Sanchez would hit Jalen Hughes on a 26-yard touchdown pass to the back of the end zone to make it 14-0. Hughes was able to make a tough grab while well covered and once again showed why he is one of the leading receivers in Region IV.

In the second quarter, sophomore Brandon Garza scored on a 38 yard run with 10:38 left in the second quarter to make it 21-0 before adding on two short-yardage scores to give the Panthers a 35-0 halftime lead.

Stevens was able to get the offense moving in the second half. The Falcons (2-6, 1-2 in District 28-6A Zone B) were turned away when it broke into the red zone on a fumble on fourth down the ball was recovered by Stevens just short of a first down.

On the next possession after an O’Connor punt, the Falcons would capitalize and get some points on the scoreboard when Carson Prouty squirted free on a 23-yard touchdown run to avoid the shutout.

FOOTBALL: Reagan 40, L.E.E. 0: Rattlers Roll to 27th Straight District Win

Fifth-ranked Reagan set up a massive Week 9 showdown with No. 7 Johnson after claiming its 27th consecutive district victory at Comalander Stadium on Saturday over L.E.E., 40-0.

Sophomore quarterback Travis Sthele managed the game well and continued to show wisdom beyond his years. Sthele hit 6’2 senior wide receiver Drew Ureste on a 52-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to extend its lead to 30-0. Sthele completed 11 of 16 passes for 183 yards on the night. Ureste caught four passes for 101 yards to lead the Rattler receivers.

Reagan capitalized on five turnovers to dominate the game from the outset. Reggie Wilson recovered a fumble to thwart a Volunteer drive and would later plunge in from one-yard out to score a rushing touchdown. Spencer Gilliam, JT Mulligan, and sophomore Jake Bullock picked off L.E.E. pass to pace the impressive defensive unit. Mulligan is a 6’3, 185-pound junior who is considered a college prospect at safety on a Reagan team that has a very strong junior class.Junior John Carrington was given a light workload for the evening, finishing with 57 yards on four carries and 2 TDs. Carrington now has visited the end zone nine times this season to lead the Reagan backfield. Eric Sierra sprinted in from 5 yards out to give the Rattlers a 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.

L.E.E. quarterback Caleb Englebrecht led the offensive on a solid drive, but with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, L.E.E. was turned away on a fourth-and-one attempt. Stephen Canto, a 6’2, 250-pound senior quarterback, faced a similar fate as Reagan stopped a drive with an interception by Bullock on the one-yard line.

Reagan is now 6-1 on the season with its only blemish coming in a loss to Harlingen prior to District play in Week 3. In what can be considered an unlucky result, the deciding factor was a last-second safety in a 22-20.

The Rattlers will have a timely bye week in place for Week 8 before returning to action against Johnson which will go a long way to determine playoff seeding. L.E.E. will get the first shot at 6-2 Johnson on Friday at Comalander Stadium.

FOOTBALL: CLEMENS 28, CANYON 7: BUFFALOES DEFENSE LOCKS DOWN AFTER ALLOWING EARLY TD

It took a little longer to get the offense moving than Clemens may have liked in a 28-7 victory over Canyon in the OK3Sports Friday Feature Game, but the Buffaloes won’t mind as they move to 6-0 and 3-0 in District 27-6A with an important victory on the road in a District where they are hard to come by.

With the victory, Clemens remained in a three-way tie for first place in 27-6A along with No. 1 Judson and No. 3 Smithson Valley, both winners in district play on Friday night. Judson hammered East Central 69-0 on the road, while Smithson Valley downed Wagner 35-7 at D.W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse. The three teams in the first place log jam are a combined 18-0 on the season.

Marshawn Brown capped off a good week by rushing for a 68-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play from scrimmage for the Buffaloes en route to 145 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, Brown averages 153.4 yards per game to lead unbeaten Clemens in rushing.

Clemens finished with 422 total yards and QB Mitchell Fauber had arguably his best game of the season finishing 9 of 14 through the air for 153 yards and two touchdowns to Under Armour All-American Bowl selection Tommy Bush. Bush would finish with four catches on the night to pace the Buffaloes on offense, while Vicente Perez would catch four passes for 81 yards. including a 63-yard effort down to inside the 5-yard line to set up Bush’s second touchdown grab of the night.

Canyon junior quarterback Zavier Perez broke Clemens’ 14-quarter scoreless streak in the first quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run with 4:34 remaining in the opening quarter to tie to game at seven. Perez showed good poise against the swarming Buffaloes defense, completing 19 of 28 passes for 170 yards on the evening for the Cougars, who fell to 1-5 and 1-2 on the season.

FOOTBALL: HIGHLANDS 38, JEFFERSON 15: MOODY FINDS THE END ZONE THREE TIMES FOR THE OWLS

In what will be a tight District 28-5A race that will go all the way down to the wire in Week 11, Highlands kept itself heavily involved in the playoff push with a 38-15 victory over Jefferson at Alamo Stadium in the OK3Sports Game of the Week. With the victory, the high-scoring Owls move to 5-1 on the season and are guaranteed to be at least tied for the top spot in the district entering Week 8.

When it comes to facing Highlands and the Joseph Palafos-led offense, the Owls have been mixing the use of his passing ability and the running ability of Rene Palomino to average over 42 points per game heading into Week 7. In the victory over Jefferson, it was Palafos who may have arguably had the best performance of his career thus far.

Palafos was nearly flawless, finishing 25 of 34 through the air for 261 yards and four TDs on the evening. Three of his touchdown strikes went to Dre’Chan Moody, who recorded 10 catches for 133 yards.

The Highlands signal caller found Gabriel Saenz on a 13-yard touchdown strike with 7:38 remaining in the opening quarter. A two-point conversion pass from Palafos to Brandon Medina gave the Owls an early 8-0 advantage. With: 16 remaining in the first quarter, Palafos found Moody for the first time on a 31-yard touchdown pass. Another two-point conversion was successful after Palafos hit Medina again, giving the Owls a 16-0 lead.

With 3:02 remaining before intermission, Highlands’ defense tacked on a touchdown on a 32-yard fumble return by Juan Luna to give the Owls a 23-0 lead at halftime.

Jefferson had some success in the running game with QB Jason Garay and Jalen Pena. Garay rushed for 121 yards on 21 carries and would throw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to get the Mustangs (2-5, 2-3) on the scoreboard. Pena, who rushed for a game-high 141 yards, would add a touchdown run with 5:16 remaining in the game.

Highlands will take on upstart Sam Houston squad on Oct. 20 at the SAISD Sports Complex. Also on Friday the 20th, Jefferson will attempt to get back on the winning track when it takes on Burbank at Edgewood Memorial Stadium.
