Wagner made an emphatic statement in its District 13-5A Division I opener on Saturday night, rushing for 422 yards on 44 carries en route to a 55-0 victory over Sam Houston.

Led by quarterback Tobias Weaver and sophomore L.J. Butler on offense, the Thunderbirds average 8.8 yards per carry over three games. Weaver averages just over 10, while Bulter averages 9.9 per tote on the young season.

Weaver, who has received an FBS offer along with numerous interest from other schools, rushed for 157 yards on 11 carries. Weaver scored on runs of 6 and 46 yards, the latter being one of his final contributions of the night as it put Wagner up 48-0 with less than one minute gone in the third quarter.

Weaver also fired a pair of touchdown passes that covered 71 yards to Karlton Black and Javon Brown. Butler rushed for 103 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Black and Xavier Avery also added rushing touchdowns for the Thunderbirds (2-1, 1-0). Butler has six rushing touchdowns already this season.

Defensively, the Thunderbirds held the Hurricanes to 78 total yards on the evening. Without starting quarterback Austen Ashworth, Sam Houston could not get its offense moving in the right direction. Junior Raymond Citizen rushed for 73 yards on nine carries and has been forced to move to quarterback.

Wagner will host Lanier at D.W. Rutledge Stadium on Saturday, while Sam Houston will get a much needed week off before facing Lanier on September 28 at Alamo Stadium. Despite its 0-3 start, Sam Houston will continue to be a playoff threat in its district.
