SA Vets Memorial 28, Brackenridge 2

First-year varsity program Veterans Memorial has won three straight games and got off to a 2-0 start in District 13-5A-I play with a 28-2 victory over Brackenridge on Thursday night at D.W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse.

Big plays were the order of the night for Veterans Memorial. Imari Motley got the Patriots on the scoreboard with a 93-yard touchdown run to give the hosts an early 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Joseph Richardson hit Lauro Mendoza on a 91-yard touchdown pass to extend the Patriots lead to 14-2.

Motley added a 61-yard effort in the third quarter to add to the misery for the Eagles, who fell to 3-2 and 2-1 on the season with the loss. In the fourth quarter, Richardson hit Darius Guess on a 14-yard touchdown pass to seal the victory.

Simeon Woodward intercepted two passes to lead the Patriots defense. Woodward is one of the most talented prospects on defense as a sophomore. Senior Logan Baier added three sacks to make matters worse for the Brackenridge offense.

Richardson finished 8-of-14 through the air for 172 yards and three touchdowns, while Motley led the Patriot backfield with 153 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns in the victory.

Veterans Memorial, winners of three straight games, will host Highlands next Friday while Brackenridge will take on 5A top-ranked Wagner.
