Madison 33, Roosevelt 3

Madison entered its bye week on a three-game winning streak after its 33-3 win over Roosevelt at Heroes Stadium on Saturday in District 27-6A action.

Elite dual-threat quarterback Dante Heaggans was up to his usual tricks, throwing for 296 yards and providing a touchdown with his legs and through the air as Madison went to 2-0 in district play. Senior wideout Aydin Hoffman continued his emergence, catching six passes for 136 yards.

Madison would finish with 527 total yards in the victory. Christian Hernandez rushed for two touchdowns, while junior Darien Gill also visited the end zone on the ground for the Mavericks.

On a defense led by Jamie Ferguson and junior linebacker De’Shaun Heaggans, the Mavericks held the Rough Riders to 149 total yards. The defensive unit also forced three turnovers.

Both teams will have a bye week in Week 6. It appears the District 27-6A race could come down to Reagan, Madison, or Johnson.

Also on Saturday night, MacArthur got its first win of the season after the Brahmas embarked on a clutch drive led by Austin Lee, resulting in a 30-yard field goal by Zachary Hawkins with :04 remaining to give MacArthur an enthralling 25-22 victory.

MacArthur got the fourth quarter scoring started when Lee hit Lanir Shabazz on a 14-year touchdown pass. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 15-14 advantage Brahmas.

Julius Ashe scored on a 71-yard run with 8:14 remaining in the game to give the Brahmas a seemingly insurmountable advantage.

However, the ground and pound attack led by 5’8 quarterback Raul Agosto got back to work. Agosto scored on a 1-yard plunge with 2:17 remaining to close the deficit to two points at 22-20. Agosto hit Isaiah Rosales on a two-point conversion pass, tying the score to set up a dramatic ending.

MacArthur scored nine first-half points that were not courtesy of the offense. Michael Gilson opened the scoring on a 30-yard fumble return for six to give the Brahmas an early 7-0 advantage. Jacob Martinez answered with a 71-yard touchdown scamper just :59 later.

Agosto would finish with 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead South San (2-3, 0-1).

Ashe would rush for a game-high 168 yards, while underrated wide receiver prospect Shabazz finished with eight catches for 123 yards. Shabazz has five touchdown receptions this season for the Brahmas (1-4, 1-1).
